It is important to remember that a micron rating without an associated beta ratio or efficiency does not fully describe the performance of a filter. Beta stability is the measure of how well a filter element is able to maintain its measured Beta Ratio at pressure drops beyond the limits of the normal operating range. For example, beta 200 stability = 210 psid, means that the Beta Ratio for the rated micron size will not drop below beta 200 until it reaches 210 psid across the element. The Beta rating comes from the Multi-pass Method for evaluating performance of a fine filter element (ISO 16889:1999). Whether you do it yourself or send samples to a lab, fluid sampling should be performed upstream and downstream of the filter to get an accurate effectiveness of the filter. When any filter can achieve a beta ratio of around 70 (just above 98% efficiency), we consider it to be an absolute rating. Anything below 98% is considered “nominal,” meaning it will trap an average size of particles of a particular size, but no guarantees. For example, if one out of every two particles in a fluid pass through the filter, the Beta ratio is 2/1 = 2. This shows the number of particles upstream (2) divided by the number of particles downstream (1). Based on this method, filters with a higher beta ratio retain more particles, have a higher efficiency, The most commonly used rating is the Beta Ratio, which is defined as the ratio of the number of particles upstream of the test filter versus the number downstream, greater than a given size. Using the Beta Ratio, a 5 micron filter with a Beta 1000 Rating, will have on average 1000 particles larger than 5 micron upstream of the filter for every one 5 micron or greater particle downstream. The same sleeve may have a Beta ratio of less than ß2 on particles the size of talcum powder. Beta ratings can be used to explain the efficiency of filtration for all fluids, oil, diesel, petrol etc; it’s simply a measurement. It is important that both the micron sizing. and Beta ratio is matched to the application. Beta Ratio refers to the efficiency in which a given filter element removes particles of a given size. The Beta Ratio is calculated using the ISO multi-pass test standard 16889:1999. The test involves adding particles of a known size to the test fluid until the fluid reaches a saturation point,

Hey thanks! As often as I've looked at the Wix web site data, I've never noticed the beta data before. Guess I need new glasses. And they have nominal micron ratings too. Way to go Wix! I've switched a lot of my air, oil and crankcase filters purchases over to Wix brand, and discoveries like this make me more satisfied that I did.

A Beta Ratio may be given for a filter as B10. = 50. (Depicted in this way on many filters). This simply means that the Beta Ratio for 10 micron equals a ration of 50  of the media used inside an element by its 'Beta ratio'. Beta Ratio refers to the efficiency in which a given filter element removes particles of a given size. The Beta Ratio is calculated using the ISO multi-pass test standard 16889:1999. The test involves adding particles of a known size to the test fluid until the fluid reaches a saturation point, The Beta Ratio is a filter rating on the performance of a filter to trap particles of a set micron size, or larger. B x is the Beta Ratio for a filter for trapping particles of "x" microns. To find the efficiency of a filter from the Beta Ratio: Efficiency (%) = 100 - (100/Beta Ratio) Example: The efficiency Beta rating is the most commonly used rating in industry for filters. Its comes from the multi-pass method for evaluating filtration performance (ISO 16889:1999). The Beta rating itself refers to filtration efficiency, however it should always be used in collaboration with the absolute rating to understand what contamination is likely to be seen in the system. Filtration Ratings Defined. Filter ratings are an often misunderstood area of contamination control. The most commonly used rating is the Beta Ratio, which is defined as the ratio of the number of particles upstream of the test filter versus the number downstream, greater than a given size. Beta Ratio helps inaccurate comparison performance of liquid filters. It helps in identifying the efficiency of the filter in removing specific sizes of dirt particles. It is this analysis that benefits the engines, hydraulic systems to get going and prevent from breakdowns.
