Morningstar Stock Grades The Morningstar stock-grading system is a quantitative scoring system that consists of three grades: Growth, Profitability, and Financial Health. They're meant to be a quick way to get a handle on a company's fundamentals. This list contains all stocks that are currently rated 5 stars. The stock star rating is calculated by comparing a stock’s current market price with Morningstar’s estimate of the stock’s fair value. The further the market price is below the fair value, the higher the star rating. Morningstar also provides category ratings and peer-group ratings to help investors further compare funds. For example, as of year-end 2018, Morningstar assigns 3.9-star rating to municipal bond funds as a group, a 3.4-star rating to domestic stock funds and a 3-star rating to international stock funds. Morningstar assigns star ratings based on our analysts' estimates of a stock's fair value. A 5-star stock is a good value at its current price; a 1-star stock isn't. Star ratings, which are updated daily, can change for three reasons: because analysts alter their estimate of a stock's fair value, because a stock's price changes, or both.
